Carol Breed is the director of The Risk Management and Insurance Center and a professor at Olivet College. She is co-advisor of the Alpha Alpha Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma, the International Risk Management and Insurance Fraternity.

Carol also serves in the capacity of Educational Consultant for the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors for the Michigan Institutes, and is a member of the Certified Insurance Service Representatives Board of Governors.

Carol earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration with a Concentration in Insurance at Olivet College and a Juris Doctor at Thomas M. Cooley Law School. She earned the Certified Insurance Counselor and the Certified Risk Manager designation from the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors and the Certified Professional Insurance Women designation from the National Association of Insurance Women. She has also earned the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, the Accredited Advisor in Insurance, and the Associate in Surplus Lines Insurance designations from the American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters.

Carol has over 35 years of experience in the field of insurance. She has worked with insurance agencies in the areas of marketing, sales, and service. Carol teaches insurance and risk management at the collegiate level for Olivet College.

Nancy VanHoozier, associate professor of Health and Human Performance, has worked at Olivet College since 1992.She teaches a range of physical education and recreation courses, including athletic officiating, kinesiology, sports psychology and sports law. VanHoozier serves on a number of Olivet College committees including: academic advising, academic policy, diversity, employee plan and service learning. She also serves on the college's Betsy Dole Women's Resource Center Advisory Committee and the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Committee. She also advises Common Ground, the student-led gay/straight alliance.

VanHoozier earned a bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State University in Kansas and a master's degree in education from the University of Kansas.

John Homer, Ph.D., Business Administration Department chair and professor of economics, has worked at Olivet College since 1979. Homer teaches all the college's economics courses and is the program coordinator of Civilization Studies, one of the college's four liberal arts core programs. His academic areas of specialization are resource economics, international trade and economic development. Homer has received the Drs. Gorton and Peggy Riethmiller Advisor of the Year Award and the Drs. Gorton and Peggy Riethmiller Teacher of the Year Award twice. Two students who received the Donald A. Morris Award, given each year to the top five graduating seniors, have chosen Homer as his/her most influential faculty member during their career at Olivet. He has also received the John J. Shipherd Award three times and the 1844 Award, and has been chosen by three graduating classes to be the baccalaureate speaker.

Homer earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Western Michigan University, and a master's degree and doctorate in economics from the University of Hawaii.

Eric A. Wiening is an author, educator, and consultant who has directly contributed to the professional development of an estimated 250,000 students of insurance and risk management. He took his first retirement in June 2003, leaving his position as assistant vice president and ethics counsel after 26 years with the American Institute for CPCU. Subsequently, among other activities, he was an adjunct professor of insurance at The American College for nearly five years. Before joining the American Institute, Mr. Wiening held marketing positions with Aetna Life & Casualty and was home office education and training supervisor for CNA Insurance.  

Eric Wiening has authored or co-authored several textbooks.He earned a BA degree from Concordia Senior College and an MS in insurance and risk management from Temple University in Philadelphia. He has earned the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter designation, as well as the Associate in Risk Management, Associate in Underwriting, Associate in Personal Insurance, and Accredited Adviser in Insurance designations from the American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters and the Insurance Institute of America and completed the Thomas A. Edison State College Certificate in Distance Education Program. He has taught live and online insurance and risk management courses for The American College, Widener University, the University of Delaware, the Insurance Society of Philadelphia, the Insurance School of Chicago, and the North American Training Alliance/Quest Training Associates in London. He also writes educational material and designs online courses in insurance and risk management. He is an active member of the CPCU Society and served for nine years as a member of its national ethics committee.

Lynda has worked at Olivet College since 2011. Leading a unique collaborative program pioneered by the Eaton Intermediate School District and Olivet College, Neff teaches high school seniors and juniors college undergraduate level classes, including principles of insurance and risk management, personal insurance and commercial insurance. In addition to these subjects, Neff teaches such financial planning classes as income taxation and retirement planning. Prior to joining the Olivet College faculty, she spent 25 years in the insurance industry, specializing in marketing, product development, and life insurance operations.

Neff holds a bachelor’s degree in organizational psychology from High Point University of North Carolina, and a master’s degree in financial services from American College of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She also holds several professional designations, including Chartered Financial Consultant, Chartered Life Underwriter and Fellow Life Management Institute.

Scott Schiefer is Accounting Coordinator at Frankenmuth Insurance where he oversees the company’s accounting systems, accounting related projects and corporate forecasting.  Scott has been in the insurance industry for more than eighteen years with experience in almost all aspects of corporate accounting and finance including property and casualty statutory accounting, life insurance, reinsurance and managerial reporting.  In addition to his professional experience within the insurance industry, Scott has served as an adjunct college instructor for approximately twelve years.

Scott graduated from Saginaw Valley State University with a BBA in Accounting and from Davenport University with a MBA in Accounting.  Scott has earned Associate in Insurance Accounting and Finance (AIAF).  He is a member of the Quest International User Group community where he currently serves as president of the Peoplesoft Financials Application user group.

 

Andrea B. Darden, AAMS (Accredited Asset Management Specialist)  After attending both Western Michigan and Stetson University, Prof. A. Darden began her career in the financial arena heading the securities department for a small company outside of Orlando, Florida. She currently works for Chisholm & Dames in Ann Arbor, MI and has 10 + years in the financial arena. She passed numerous securities licenses including her series, 7, 9/10, 24, 66, 65 and her insurance license. She also holds the AAMS certification through the College of Financial Planning. Darden brings professional real-world experience to her classroom. Her students do more than just learn from a textbook. They begin to understand how to apply what they learn to tasks the students may encounter after graduation. She is a member of the Washtenaw Estate Planning Council and the Downtown Ann Arbor Rotary Club. She is also on several non-profit boards including the Cancer Support Community and Allen Creek Preschool.

 

Walt Unti was a property and casualty insurance executive for 30 years. His insurance background includes insuring homes, cars, mobile homes, RV’s, cycles, snowmobiles, boats, dealerships, physicians, and hospitals. He has managed almost all of the insurance functions including underwriting, claims, actuarial, policy processing, customer service, marketing and sales. In 1989 he started a “virtual” insurance company with the help of venture capitalists. In 2001 he left the insurance industry to become a professor and coordinator of business for Napa Valley College. He established California’s first entirely online Community College business degree. He currently works as an Associate Adjunct Professor of Insurance & Risk Management at Olivet College.

 

James English is Assistant Director & Senior Property Broker at Aon Brokerage Group – National Property.  His experience with Aon and Marsh has resulted in an Industry-recognized expertise in Complex Property Insurance Programs –notably Automotive OEMs and Tier One and Two Suppliers – personal relationships and a network with many leaders in the Global underwriting community and knowledge of many Global Insurance Trading Centers, including:  Chicago; New York; London; Bermuda; Continental Europe and other countries. He also currently works as an Associate Adjunct Professor of Insurance and Risk Management at Olivet College teaching Global Insurance and Risk Management in the MBA program.
